The water is now accessible to persons with physical disabilities
Wheelchair users and their carers in Cork can now enjoy the experience of sailing thanks to a vessel adapted to their needs. The first wheelchair accessible Inclusion Powerboat in the Irish city is called Saoirse, which means “freedom”. As its name suggests, it enables the persons with physical disabilities to benefit from the large sailing opportunities on the Island in a safe way.
Saoirse, the Wheelyboat V20 meets high standards of a similar vessel and is believed to have exceptional capabilities. With speed of 55 kilometres per hour fully charged, it still manages to keep passengers dry from sea spray. Furthermore, its powerful engine is economical and easy to manage. During a single trip, it can host a total of six wheelchair users together with 6 persons accompanying them in a versatile way for maximum comfort.
The purchase of the Inclusion Powerboat was funded under the Sports Capital Programme. Kinsale OEC who have attained funding and conducted the tests of the newly-arrived vessel. The latter will be transporting passengers around Bandon Estuary, Kinsale Harbour for tours or even fishing over the next months. The official launch of the boat was held on 23rd August with the participation of Mayor of County Cork Cllr. Christopher O’ Sullivan.
