The Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković has already started to work on his country presidency of the Council of the EU which is in the first half of 2020. Europe's newest member state’s main focus is the preparation of the country to join the Schengen zone at least during the Croatian presidency of the EU Council. Other priority before the country takes the leadership of the EU Council is to normalize the relations with its neighboring countries.
The Presidency of the Council of the EU is that important for every EU member because by holding it, the country has a unique opportunity to influence the EU’s agenda and its role is to guide the Council’s endeavors through its 6-month program. It chairs all the different Council meetings except for the Foreign Affairs Council which brings many of the high level EU representatives and journalists in the country.
