Cutting down electricity consumption by half with EU funding

Learn how the Spanish seaport town of Garrucha will modernize its lighting systems and consume less energy

Smart governance means first and foremost using the public resources efficiently. Electricity is of course, no exception. Luckily, good examples of this can be found everywhere in the European Union. For instance, the Spanish town of Garrucha, is one step closer to achieving the goal of efficient consumption, thanks to a European project. The project funded at 50% rate by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) has a main objective to reduce the consumption of electricity at public spaces by half.

The reduction of power consumption by 50% shall be achieved through installing LED street lightning and modernizing it considerably. The local authorities of the Andalusian seaport are certain that the new measures will have positive effect on the municipal budget but also – on the environment thanks to the enhanced energy efficiency.

The total amount of allocated funding is 488 thousand EUR, 80% of which provided by ERDF, which shall be rolled out within the next 30 months. Within the upcoming half a year the municipality is expected to organize the tenders and procuring for the necessary services and supplies in accordance with EU and national law.

Garrucha is located in the province of Almeria in the autonomous community of Andalusia. The small town overseeing the Mediterranean sea is very popular with local and international tourists.
