Citizen science aims at bridging the gap between science and the general public, actively involving citizens in research projects – this can include identifying research questions, collecting and analyzing data, or developing new technologies and applications. In this way, citizen scientists can work side by side with experts, contributing to the increase of scientific knowledge and addressing local, national and international issues that need scientific support. As a volunteer and citizen scientist, you can provide valuable help to the collective effort of gathering data on the waste situation worldwide.
Mapping trash is not an easy task. But it is a very important one, as there is still very little knowledge about how much mismanaged waste there is. In order to clean up the world, we first need to know where the ‘dirty’ places are and where the volunteers should focus their efforts. Waste mapping is also important for monitoring purposes and keeping track of how our efforts are improving waste management practices around the world. We don’t just want to Clean up the World on 15th September – we also want to keep it clean after the big day!
