300 student residences will be added in Eindhoven before the end of this year, announced the municipality. The movable prefabricated houses will be installed on the site near the Berenkuil on the corner of Insulindelaan and Eisenhowerlaan. They are specifically intended to be used by international students of the Fontys University and the Eindhoven University of Technology and will be managed by student housing provider Vestide, part of Woonbedrijf.
If everything goes according to plan, the first homes will be ready by the end of October and will then be furnished and prepared for rental. The contractor will deliver the last homes at the beginning of December.
The need for student housing is justified by the great demand in the city, which is very popular with students. Furthermore, the educational institutions in the Dutch city expect a growth of more than 6,000 students before 2023. That, accordingly, also means increased demand for housing. Here is why Vestide wanted to rush into realizing affordable housing for students in advance. The landlord therefore sought cooperation with the municipality.
What was needed at first was a location which is immediately available, said Yasin Torunoglu, alderman for living and space. Hence, the location was found close to the centre and the educational institutions. A choice has been made for homes to be in place for a period of 15 years, he explained. After this period, Woonbedrijf will be looking for a new location to move the units so that they could get a second life.
