Enjoy Lithuanian history and tradition in the Merkine Manor

The historical site was recently leased to a new company, which aims to develop it in the perfect tourist spot

The Varena District Municipality recently signed a forty-year lease with the local soap factory for the maintaining of one of Lithuania’s most famous and most visited historical landmarks. The Merkine Manor combined the perfect landscape with vast historical heritage. Located near the village of Dzukija, it boasts a 25-meter-tall observation tower which allows visitors to gaze upon large swathes of the country. Tourists interested in the historical background of the location will also find the Merkine visitor center, the Merkine Regional Museum and the Merkine Cross Hill. Furthermore, for those who want to explore surrounding nature, the local government has established cycling trail near the historical sites. This combination of all kinds of attractions are what drives thousands of tourists to visit the area each year.

The new tender of the grounds has stated that they want to make Merkine Manor even better. It will provide accommodations to everyone visiting and will focus its culinary menu on traditional local and Lithuanian cuisine.

The mayor of Varena District Municipality, Algis Kašėje, was eager to point out that one of the factors contributing to the area’s touristic success is its great strategic location. “It is easily accessible from Vilnius and Kaunas, near the popular Druskininkai and near the Polish border. We hope that in the objects once visited and lived by kings and princes, …, we will soon be able to enjoy not only the revived historical buildings but also the tourists”.
