As part of an international EU project
Espoo will participate in an international EU project that promotes energy efficiency and electromobility. The SPARCs project is a smart city initiative that brings together 31 partners with the common aim to create a network of Sustainable energy Positive & zero cARbon Communities.
The officially kicking off was on 1st October 2019. The next activity, part of the project is a gathering of the partners at a General Assembly in Espoo, Finland on 11th October.
Jukka Mäkelä, Mayor of Espoo attended the grand opening ceremony of the SPARCs project this week and undelined that "This is a highly significant EU project in the field of urban development. It is an excellent match to Espoo's climate goals and our status as a pioneer in sustainable development".
The timeframe of the project is 5 years. During this period the city of Espoo will initially focus on the areas around the Lippulaiva shopping centre in Espoonlahti, the Sello shopping centre in Leppävaara and the Kera district. After that, the best practices will be implemented on a larger scale.
The project will provide systematic support for urban transformation and community engagement in two Lighthouse Cities - Espoo in Finland and Leipzig in Germany. The developed solutions will be closely followed in 5 Fellow Cities: Maia (Portugal), Kifissia (Greece), Reykjavik (Iceland), Kladno (Czech Republic) and Lviv (Ukraine) with the goal of future replication.
The project is set to trigger urban transformation while keeping a high quality of life for citizens in the 7 cities. It will also support the participating cities in developing a shared bold City Vision 2050, with a focus on digitalisation, sustainable energy, improved air quality, electro-mobility solutions.
A top priority will be to set up inclusive management and planning models as well as ecosystems and processes together with companies, city planning and technical departments, research organisations, and the citizens. In SPARCs, citizens are at the centre of the decision-making process.
