The EU Budget has a significant impact on the lives of every European citizen. On 2nd of May, the European Commission presented its proposal for a modern, fair, simple and flexible long term EU Budget. The new budget will enter into force in January 2021 for a period of 7 years, until 2027. A major innovation in the proposed budget is the strengthened link between EU funding and the rule of law.
By focusing on the areas where the Union is best placed to deliver, it is a budget for a Europe that protects, empowers and defends. Investing now in areas such as research and innovation, young people, the digital economy, border management, security and defense will contribute to prosperity, sustainability and security in the future. For instance, the budget of Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps will be doubled.
