8 partners turn their passion for wood into their work
Based in Foligno, in Italy’s Umbria region, Umbria Legno is an innovative start-up using wood as a construction material. As well as being durable and environmentally sustainable, wood reduces energy consumption in buildings. Thanks to EU support, Umbria Legno’s founders were able to get financing on favourable terms and start the business.
Due to the economic crisis, the company for which 4 of Italian wood firm Umbria Legno’s founders had worked for many years closed. They thus joined 4 fellow woodworkers to open Umbria Legno in May 2016. As a start-up, they had no credit history, which made it hard to get finance. A loan from credit provider guaranteed by EU funds enabled them to buy supplies and develop the business. Within 18 months, turnover had increased by over 30%. New people have been hired and a production line to meet the needs of a growing market is under development in low-energy buildings. Umbria Legno also hopes to support reconstruction in areas of Italy affected by earthquakes by offering fast, inexpensive housing solutions.
