European Committee of the Regions elects new head

Apostolos Tzitzikostas, EPP, was elected President with Vasco Alves Cordeiro, PES, serving as his First Vice-President

Earlier today, at the 138th Plenary Session of the European Committee of the Regions, members elected the Committee’s President and First Vice-President for the 2020-2025 mandate.

Apostolos Tzitzikostas, EPP, was chosen to serve as head of the European Committee of the Regions. He boasts rich experience in regional politics having led the administration of the Greek region of Central Macedonia as Governor since his election in 2014. Prior to that, he had also served as Vice-Governor of the region as well as the Head of the Metropolitan Area of Thessaloniki.

Priorities for the new mandate

Within his candidacy speech, Mr. Tzitzikostas outlined three key priority areas on which he will be focusing throughout his mandate. The first priority is bringing the European Union and its institutions closer to its citizen. To achieve that goal, he believes that the European Committee of the Regions should focus on local and regional policies that have a direct impact on people’s lives.

His 2nd priority is to lead the institution’s evolution and modernisation. Apostolos Tzitzikostas believes that the European Committee of the Regions must adapt to be able to respond to modern challenges and to focus on understanding and responding to the ongoing green, digital and demographic revolutions.

As his 3rd and final priority, Mr. Tzitzikostas outlined the need for the Committee of the Regions to find new ways to inject more democracy into the European Union, by strengthening the roles of local and regional authorities throughout the continent.

The European Committee of the Regions also elected Vasco Alves Cordeiro, PES, as its First Vice-President. Mr. Cordeiro currently serves as the President of the Regional Government of the Azores and in the past has filled many other roles in the region’s government – including the post of Regional Secretary for the Economy.
