Everyone in Luxembourg went on vacation 1.7 times in summer 2022

Today, the Luxembourg national statistical agency Statec published a report showing that in the summer of 2022, people made 916,000 leisure stays during the summer. For reference, Luxembourg has a population of 640,000.

According to the report, this means that every Luxembourger went on vacation 1.7 times in the first summer when the pandemic regulations relaxed. These numbers were even greater than the pre-pandemic trends, 36% greater than in 2019 – the previous peak of tourism.

Opening the doors to tourism

During the summer of 2022, while the pandemic was still part of many countries, a lot of travel restrictions were relaxed. This acted as a catalyst for Luxembourgish tourists, who went above and beyond last year and travelled more than they had ever before. flew for their vacation (34%).

Additionally, in 2022 tourism travel increased by 36% compared to 2019. This is a stark contrast to 2020, which saw a 24% decline compared to the previous year.

In 2021 a lot of Luxembourgers opted to stay inside the country for their vacation with around 37%. In 2022 they mostly travelled abroad with the number of domestic stays falling to 24%. Nevertheless, the number of stays in Luxembourg remained much higher than before the Covid-pandemic.

The most visited locations

Furthermore, most visits were made by car (56%) while air travel reached a never before seen peak, clearly exceeding pre-Covid levels with 34% of trips. The train accounted for only 5% of vacation travel. At the same time, the most popular vacation destinations for Luxembourgers were Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

At the same time, most vacation habits remained the same, with 70% of respondents saying they vacation to rest. However, there was a slight increase in people travelling for culture and festivals, especially compared to the pandemic years.

Additionally, researchers observed a sustained increase in family visits during 2022, which remained relatively high.
