More cats on the streets of Lisbon for a public health reason
The program Patrulha Gato (Cat Patrol), approved by the City Hall of Lisbon will start this month. The project aims to relocate feral cat colonies to neighborhoods with complains about the presence of mouses and rats. If this method works, it could be implemented in other cities around Portugal as well.
Marisa Quaresma dos Reis from Animais de Rua (Animals on the Street), the leading organization in the project, stated that placing cats around the city could not only avoid introducing chemicals and poisons near homes and playgrounds but also could help saving cats from potentially life-threatening situations. It is possible to accommodate a cat after a direct request to the local authority.
