Finland eases border control restrictions from 21 June

Travellers from the EU and Schengen area will be able to enter the country under certain criteria

From Monday 21 June, Finland will loosen its border control restrictions. More specifically, it will allow travellers from the EU and Schengen area to enter the country via all modes of transport, providing that they meet the necessary criteria.

What are the new entry conditions?

In a press release, the Finnish government announced that the restrictions on internal border traffic will be eased. This refers to traffic between Finland and other Schengen countries. The new rules will permit both business travellers and tourists to enter the country, as long as they fulfil one of the following requirements:

  1. Received both shots of the COVID vaccine and at least 2 weeks have elapsed since the last dose was administered.
  2. Recovered from COVID and received at least one dose of the vaccine over one week prior to travel.
  3. Recovered from COVID less than 6 months ago.

In addition to this, internal border controls limitations have been lifted for traffic arriving from Poland and Hungary.

Minor changes to external border traffic restrictions

External border traffic reportedly refers to that between Finland and non-Schengen countries. According to the Finnish government, restrictions will be lifted for traffic arriving from Monaco, Romania, and San Marino as of 21 June. Moreover, it is important to note that restrictions have already been lifted for the Vatican, Australia, South Korea, Israel, Singapore, Rwanda, and New Zealand.

The government reports that the changes are owed to the low infection rates in the aforementioned countries.

Travellers must still be cautious

Despite the alleviation of border control restrictions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns all travellers to exercise caution when travelling to the EU and Schengen area. Taking this further, it recommends avoiding unnecessary travel to all countries, except those for which restrictions on entry have been lifted.
