It’s not for the faint-hearted
It will be a place for kids and adults to learn how to care for fruit, vegetable and vine plants
The first community garden is about to be established in the Romanian City of Oradea by the Asociaţia Grund Community (Grund Community Association). There the locals will grow fruit, vegetables and vines, as well participate in workshops about sustainable gardening.
The Oradea Community Foundation, part of the Community Foundations Associations in Romania secured the funding for the project, necessary for the proper tools and seeds so that the large plot on Sofiei Street can start to function.
So far, the association has managed to attract ten families to take care of the plot. They will also be responsible for organizing the workshops and community events related to the harvest and Chestnut day – a local festival celebrating a 400-year-old chestnut forest.
The workshops will target both kids and adults and will touch on the topic of vegetable preservation.
The community garden is one of the ten projects in Oradea funded by the national program "Fund for a better future in communities", created by the Oradea Community Foundation and funded by Lidl Romania, with about 50,000 euros.
The ten projects carried out between February 2020 and May 2021 included 246 innovative activities in the fields of education and environment, involving 2,632 citizens of Oradea, who totalled 1,624 hours of volunteer work.
Through the "Garden in school" project, for example, three educational gardens have been set up to give children the opportunity to interact with nature, and learn to grow vegetables and flowers on their own.
The Romanian National News Agency - AGERPRES reported what the project manager of the Oradea Community Foundation, Teodora Albiter had to say: "It is a huge garden, in the hills of Oradea. The caretakers will organize social activities there and children can learn sustainable gardening techniques, build birdhouses or insect hotels.
We were very happy to be able to support the first steps in building the first community garden in Oradea with activities for children and adults."
