Larnaca Municipality is one of the organizers of the sport event
The first-ever international chess tournament in Cyprus will take place in Larnaca at the end of the month of October and will be held over nine days.
The Cyprus Chess Federation and the Friends of Chess Association are the oldest chess organisations in the country and both have been promoting the sport around the island for many years. Both organisations, jointly or individually, hold over 30 chess events each year.
Hundreds of chess players take part in these annual events. They participate in a variety of competitions such as chess tournaments, creative chess as well as in training and arbitration seminars and others.
In 2019, for the first time ever, the Federation and the Association along with the Municipality of Larnaca and Flamingo Beach Hotel Larnaca are collaborating to jointly organise the 1st International Chess Tournament - the largest one ever held in Cyprus. The event will take place between 25 October and 2 November.
A total of 137 players from 18 countries will participate in the chess tournament. The lineup will also include 24 star chess players. There will also be chess tournaments for children and adults organised in various categories. Awards will of course also be distributed depending on the nature of the respective competition.
According to the organisers “The tournament is an investment in our children, tomorrow’s Cypriot international chess players. An effort is made through which many children will be motivated to engage with chess, a sport admittedly beneficial to people at all stages of their lives, and especially at a young age. Kids and other chess players will get in touch with world-class chess players and acquire the skills and abilities that all people need.”
Special hotel rates are offered by the Flamingo Beach Hotel Larnaca for those who wish to participate or watch the event.
