Free public transport in Germany due to dirty air

Free public transport in Germany due to dirty air

The measure will be implemented in 5 major cities

The German authorities have decided to try to fight against the problem with dirty air by making public transport free of charge. In five major cities in the country, the measure will be introduced to trace if there is any change in the air condition.

The country has begun to seek measures against the worsening of air quality after the European Union warned Germany that it would be subject to sanctions if anti-pollution action are not taken. The plan provides free public transport in Bonn, Essen, Reutlingen, Mannheim and Herrenberg. The measure will be tested for a trial period. There is also a proposal to introduce "low emission zones" that would affect heavy goods transport.
