Horizon 2020 is one of Europe’s biggest success stories. The new Horizon Europe program aims even higher
Horizon Europe is the European Union’s new 7-year research program that will start in 2021. It is designed to connect people with the achievements financed by their tax money, and to fix problems with innovation funding. Horizon 2020 is one of Europe’s biggest success stories and the new Horizon Europe program aims even higher. The European Union’s next research and innovation program will be worth 100 billion Euros, according to proposals launched by the European Commission.
The plans for Horizon Europe contain a lot of continuity with Horizon 2020 but also some new elements such as the establishment of a European Innovation Council to promote innovation and the introduction of mission-oriented research. The planned program is structured around three pillars: open science, global challenges and industrial competitiveness, and open innovation. Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen, responsible for jobs, growth, investment and competitiveness, said: “Investing in research and innovation is investing in Europe’s future.”
