Hybrid taxis raise clean air awareness in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

The vehicles are part of the campaign “Las Palmas de Gran Canaria thinks with its lungs”

The Councillor of Public Services, Inmaculada Medina, launched a new chapter in the campaign “Las Palmas de Gran Canaria thinks with its lungs”, which has been capturing the attention of citizens since May. Five hybrid taxi cars, displaying the campaigns messages will serve as mobile posters in the city.

Hybrid transportation is an ideal fit for the campaign

Adding the modern vehicles to the awareness campaign is a creative way to contribute another dimension to the problem of recycling. Burning residual packaging from products directly contributes to the elevated CO2 levels in the atmosphere.

That is why, this initiative, which also sees the participation of the Government of the Canary Islands and Ecoembes, an environmental non-profit organization, wants to serve as a reminder.

“Recycling and educating for sustainability is essential and that is why we want to spread this message throughout the city, expressing the importance of recycling with messages on this type of taxis, which emphasize the campaign: continue to improve air quality,” explained Councillor Medina.

Data shows that the residents of the Grancanarian capital have been making good strides in the field of recycling. So far this year their recycling rates have gone 5% up and when it comes to packaging the number climbs to 16%.

Nevertheless, the City Council thinks that is not enough. Despite the positive trends it considers it an essential policy to inculcate a long-term consciousness about the effects of domestic waste.

These effects are harmful for the environment, but it does not have to be so. With proper sorting and recycling practices in place, people can learn to think about packaging as a potential resource for the circular economy.
