Provocated by the smog in the European cities in winter time, TheMayor.eu asks about your opinion regarding to the different methods to protect yourself from the high level of air pollution. The air over Europe achieved a remarkable quality this winter. As winds died and a freezing stillness gripped, levels of nitrogen oxides and particles of soot slowly built up in the air until they reached maximum measurable levels. When this disturbing levels of pollution is reached, men, women and children with lung problems, adults with heart conditions, and older people are all advised to avoid strenuous physical activity, while asthma sufferers are told to use their reliever inhaler more often.   

How can you protect yourself from smog?

• Limit your outdoor activities
  Avoid exercising in smoggy conditions, particularly at midday when ground ozone levels are at their highest.
• Cleaning indoor air
  Portable or central air cleaning systems, an air purifier can reduce concentrations of indoor air pollutants, of either outdoor or indoor origin. Whether it is called an air purifier or an air cleaner, the most important components of this type of machine are its air filters.
• Choose effective face protection
  The masks designed for industrial use are the most effective.
• Stay hydrated
  Intake of water and other healthy juices will help in cleaning your body and blood of harmful pollutants.
• Try to limit emissions
  We should try to use public transportation instead of driving and work together to reduce our emissions.
• Check daily air-quality alerts
  You can protect yourself and your family by checking daily air-quality alerts and planning your outdoor activities appropriately.
• Don’t burn wood or trash
  Burning firewood and trash are among the major sources of particle pollution in many parts of the country.
