Toulouse is the first municipality to introduce the aesthetical plant construction of the canopy. Watch video.
Toulouse is the first French city to implement the canopy: an innovative solution which aims to combat the effects of climate change by deploying climbing vegetables on mobile structures over the city. A bouquet of 3 planted corolles (100m² of plants) on the Place Jean Diébold will reduce the effects of heat, restore urban biodiversity, fight against air pollution and improve the quality of life of the citizens.
The vegetable cover is grafted onto a lightweight, adaptable and flexible frame. The flowering of the 9 climbing plants comes in a variety of colours changing seasonally. This succession of diverse and varied plant environments promotes ecological diversity. In Toulouse the plant essences were selected by engineering students from the French PURPAN school.
The cutting-edge solution by Urban Canopee allows the local actors to plant the urban landscape of tomorrow, by making them more resilient to climate change, achieve eco certifications for buildings and districts. Deployed in city centres, these are particularly effective in reducing greenhouse emissions, reduce the risk of flooding and promote freshness.
