New project aiming to support innovative and cost-effective energy rehabilitation in public buildings has received funding of more than 2.8 million euros. Four countries – Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Israel collaborate in the project which is coordinated by the University of Cyprus’ Foss Research Centre.
The main beneficiary is the University of Cyprus. Partners are the Technological Research Centre of Western Macedonia in Greece, Eilat Municipality, the Hevel Eilot regional council and the Ben Gurion University in Israel, the University of Cagliary in Italy and Deloitte Limited in Cyprus.
The time frame of the project is three years. During this period the aim is to improve the penetration of renewable energy resources in public buildings, focusing on photovoltaics, and improving battery storage. The buildings will be tranformed into smart and resilient “nano-grids” using storage. The project will also turn people into active consumers.
The first activity part of the project is to show students at 6 schools and universities in the four countries that it is possible to create self-sufficient public buildings which are smarter, greener, innovative and sustainable.
The project partners will also demonstrate what can be done to regulators, policy makers, the private sector and the public. The key element is to show and demonstrate rather than just discuss the issue with the stakeholders.
The project has to stimulate future replication in other Mediterranean/EU regions and to enhance interest and capacity of public authorities. It also aims to strenghten the competitiveness of small and medium sized businesses. Attracting professionals to train in new innovations for highly efficient buildings, and boosting business and job opportunities in building retrofitting is another goal of the project.
Last but not least, this big scale project is aimed at enhancing cooperation of countries which have common problems and can find common solutions for the benefit of Mediterranean countries.
The topic of climate change is on top of the agenda of all the participant countries within the project. All of them agree that one country cannot achieve a solution alone and hope that in future more countries in the region will cooperate.
