Nominations are now open for “Cultural Event of the Year” and “Innovative Cultural Act”
Individuals working in arts and culture have struggled tremendously over the past year and a half. The outbreak of the pandemic resulted in the closure of entertainment and cultural venues as governments worldwide deemed gatherings dangerous. Ever since then, many artists have worked relentlessly to make ends meet. Some, on the other hand, were forced to give up their passion and pursue work in other fields.
Now that countries are gradually reopening, cultural events are not only allowed but encouraged. Taking a case in point, the Czech City of Jihlava has created two new awards to inspire local artists and creators to take up their passions once more and continue working.
"The reason for announcing the competition in 2021 is to support and motivate all those facing the current difficult situation. The cultural area is one of those most affected by the consequences of the pandemic, so we want to thank and appreciate those who did not give up and help show that culture is worth caring for,” explained Councillor for Culture Silvie Čermáková in a press release by the municipality.
As of this month and until January 2022, anyone can nominate a cultural act or event for the two categories: Cultural Event of the Year and Innovative Cultural Act. To be eligible for nomination, the events must have taken place in Jihlava.
After the submissions have been evaluated, citizens will be asked to vote in both categories during February. After this, the cultural commission will assess the results and select four nominees for further consideration. Čermáková expanded on this, noting: “Four events will be selected – two events by the public and two events by an expert jury, i.e., cultural commission. The results of both evaluations will be submitted to the Jihlava City Council for approval.”
The winners will be announced at a gala dinner in the Horácký Theater in the spring of 2022. Instead of a monetary award, the winners will receive a work of art created by a local artist.
