In December, authorities cancelled Museum Night due to the pandemic
Last December, authorities in Ghent had to postpone Museum Night due to a spike in Covid cases. This week, they announced the new date for the event – 3 March 2022. The move is part of the authorities’ commitment to postpone the event instead of cancelling it.
In practical terms, this means that the Belgian city will hold two Museum Nights in 2022 – the one in March and another one on 1 December 2022.
This will be the last chance citizens will get to visit the Design Museum for quite some time, as after Museum Night, the facility will close for the next two years. The museum will go through extensive reconstruction and, back in December, the city tried to find a new home for one of the museum’s iconic landmarks – a giant toilet paper roll.
Visitors will also have the chance to visit the large pop-art exhibition in the SMAK (The city’s modern art museum), as well as an exhibition racking the development of cash registers over the years in the Industrial Museum.

Museum-goers can also experience 'The square kilometre: Neuseplein & Brugse Poort' and 'The story of Ghent' exhibition in STAM (the Ghent city museum). The exhibition maps the historic part of the city from the 16th century to the present day and visitors can examine different urban spaces via a digital interface. The spaces, in their own right, are represented by a collection of historic paintings and photographs, tracking their development to the present day.
All events are still free and will go into the night, however, due to Covid-measures, visitors will have to register for every museum they plan on going to.
At the same time, this year, all museums in the city will have late Thursdays. This means that they will stay open until 10 PM every first Thursday of the month while charging regular fees.
