An unconventional open-air learning space was officially put into operation in the Czechoslovak Aviation Park, Ostrava on Friday 14 June. The classroom is realised as a part of a project titled "Outdoor Class" which succeeded in last year's call of the city's subsidy program. Its implementation is financially supported with 230 thousand crowns. The project was initiated by teachers from the 1st International School of Ostrava and the opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Mayor Kateřina Šebestová.
In the vicinity of the park in the city centre there are several schools - ZŠ Matiční, ZŠ Ostrčilova, International Grammar School or Faculty of Science of the University of Ostrava. Thus, the opportunity to teach pupils and students from the outside is perceived as a wonderful opportunity to open up new horizons.
Deputy Mayor Kateřina Šebestová expressed her approval of the public's interest in transforming and beautifying the public space around the park. She emphasized that not only the pupils and their teachers will benefit from the adaptation, but all the local citizens as well. The class is designed in such a way that it can offer space not only for pleasant relaxation but also for work. Šebestová was positive that the new learning environment will be useful daily and expressed her gratitude to all those who contributed to the successful implementation of the project.
Thus, the place will be beautified and administered by students of the International Grammar School for two years, then its maintenance will be taken over by the city. It is made of concrete and therefore its upkeep is expected to be easy. The design will be completed by the grammar school students in the spirit of the Little Prince, which thematically complements the name of the park and its memorial as the author Exupéry was himself an aviator.
Applicants for the current subsidy call of Ostrava entitled "FINE SPACE" may submit applications for financial support until 15 August. With support from the city, residents can reinvent public spaces - streets, squares, parks and other places by their own designs, increase their utility, or provide them with a new function. 5 million crowns will be distributed under the third call for proposals.
