Slovenia has much higher levels of recycling of household waste than the EU average and much lower levels of disposal in landfill
The Regional Waste Management Centre (RCERO Ljubljana) in the Slovenian capital is the most modern and one of the largest in Europe. It handles the waste of 58 municipalities which means that one third of Slovenia’s waste is treated at the facility with nearly half of the country's population, benefiting from the centre.
More than 170 000 tons of waste is treated in the centre every year, whether it is biodegradable or not. Only 2% of residual waste ends up at the landfill, when up to 98% is recycled into objects, compost or fuel - thanks to the biofuel produced by the fermentation of the compost. In addition, the centre is self-sufficient in terms of energy. The treatment centre offers also free compost for the maintenance of the city's green spaces.
