The European Commission is launching a competition to award the title of European Capital of Smart Tourism 2019 to two European cities with the most smart, innovative and inclusive approaches to their tourism development. This new initiative showcases and recognises outstanding achievements by EU destinations in the 4 areas of: sustainability, accessibility, digitalisation as well as cultural heritage and creativity.
In addition to the 2 capitals, 4 European cities will receive thematic European smart tourism awards for their achievements in each of the 4 areas listed above. The awarded cities will be presented during a special exhibition at the award ceremony in Brussels on 7 November 2018 as part of European Tourism Day. By rewarding exemplary practices of smart tourism, the EU seeks to encourage innovation of tourism destinations, support culturally diverse and inclusive tourism and highlight the multi-faceted contribution of tourism to sustainable development.
