Due to the imposed home isolation and social distancing measures, the number of victims of domestic violence has increased drastically
On 1st April, the mayor of Bucharest Gabriela Firea inaugurated the largest social centre for victims of domestic violence in the Romanian capital. The centre, arranged by the City Hall of Bucharest, through the Social Assistance Department, has 32 studios, 4 apartments with 2 rooms, and a capacity of 100 places.
In her Facebook profile, Firea wrote: “In this difficult time for all of us, to be safe, it is necessary for everyone to stay in the house, but unfortunately, there are people who are NOT safe in their own home, feel isolated, scared and defenceless.”
According to statistics, in the period of social isolation and distance the number of victims of domestic violence increase. This is the reason why the municipality has prepared to offer shelter to these people.
All the women for whom the isolation at home represents a danger to the health and life can be addressed to the General Directorate of Social Assistance of the Municipality of Bucharest. Currently, 8 mothers and 14 children are housed in the centre.

The appeal of mayor Firea to all Bucharest residents who know people for whom this period represents a danger is to contact the representatives of the General Direction of Social Assistance of the Municipality of Bucharest. This centre offers hosting for up to one year, with the possibility of extension, food, legal assistance, psychological and social assistance, even jobs.
Every woman in Bucharest, who is a victim of domestic violence and needs help, can call the national number 0800 500 333. These persons will be directed to the dedicated centre, administered by the City Hall of Bucharest.
