Milan is also the first city in Italy to host an experimental laboratory for public transit
Innovative and digital local transport solutions are coming to Italian cities and one of the chosen ones by the government to host a MaaS (Mobility as a Service) platform is Milan, together with Naples and Rome.
The northern Italian city, however, will be also the only one to host a Living Lab, which will study in real context modern innovations and their impact on residents’ lives.
Implementing a MaaS platform means that the cities in question will be able to dispose of single digital platform, which integrates all the mobility modes available locally to the public (for example e-bikes, buses, car sharing, trains, taxis, and scooters). The citizens living in Milan, Rome and Naples will have the chance to take advantage of the innovative tool which lets them manage their trips from planning to payment, all on one app.
In addition, the city of Milan was selected for the creation of a Living Lab on the "Cooperative, connected and automated mobility", to test innovative local transport solutions as they will affect the commuters’ lives directly.
More specifically, Milan has nominated the circular trolleybus line 90/91 to be the testbed for achieving three strategic objectives: connectivity, inter-modality and citizens' needs. Along this line, technologies for autonomous driving will be tested, and the possibility of carrying out tests for self-driving cars by car manufacturers or other operators. Likewise, interchange systems in the framework of MaaS will be tested in some of the stops.
"I am proud that our city will be able to experience this revolution in the transport system,” stated the Councillor for Mobility in Milan, Arianna Censi. “Our Administration has for some time had the objectives of sustainable, integrated and accessible mobility, aimed at improving quality of life of citizens. And this can also be achieved thanks to technological innovation, leading to the decongestion of traffic and the decreasing of air pollution."
The Italian Ministry of Innovation has made 2.5 million euros available for each city to test the MaaS and 800 thousand euros for the digitization of public transport. In addition, 7 million euros will be made available for the experimentation of the Living Lab in Milan.
