Munich launches initiative to provide employment to citizens and relief to medical personnel

The “Helping Hand” project will give struggling service workers jobs that are meant to help medical staff in their everyday lives

Because of the dramatic situation due to the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the city, the Munich Department for Health and Environment (RGU) is urgently looking for specialists for housekeeping and service on a mini-job basis in the Munich clinics and homes.

The additional "helping hands" are intended to relieve the medical staff so that they can concentrate fully on their patients. Currently, authorities are on the lookout for employees from catering companies and hotels who are currently on short-time work - and who want to pursue a meaningful job.

Providing relief in any way they can

The Munich district office of the Dehoga Hotel and Restaurant Association has called on its members to help find service staff in hospitals and nursing homes. Together with the RGU, they immediately started a coordinated flyer campaign as they seek employees who will fit the government’s needs. More than 1,200 Dehoga member companies in the city and district of Munich were informed about the "Helping Hands" initiative by newsletter earlier this month and the response was extremely positive with many employees contacting RGU directly.

One of the reasons for the warm reception of the new initiative is the fact that due to COVID-19 many restaurants, pubs and bars were forced to close down, effectively cutting many citizens off from their employment. Thus, the “helping hands” project not only protects the lives of locals but also guarantees them short-term employment until Munich and its surrounding manage to find their footing amid the crisis.
