Learn about the Go In Nature Project in the cross-border area of Slovenia and Hungary

INTERREG Slovenia-Hungary is one of the many cross-border cooperation programs within the EU funded by the cohesion policy. It aims at developing the region, making it sustainable and green, raising competitiveness and economic development.

“Go In Nature”

Currently, the European Program implements a few projects, one of which promotes green tourism called “Go In Nature”. It is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and aims to establish a network of providers of green infrastructure for touristic sites.

The project runs for 3 years – from 2017 to 2020 and includes a few municipalities on both sides of the border between Slovenia and Hungary. It strengthens the cooperation between the regions in the area and the promotion of eco-tourism.

One of the partners, Murska Sobota, created a network of nature-friendly and sustainable areas where people can experience nature in a sustainable way in the cross-border region. Only in 2019, there were a number of new restrooms constructed, several wooden playgrounds have been installed and a bridge was renovated. In addition, the project also created outdoor classrooms and an animal observatory for educational purposes. This way the area will be attractive for touristic, recreational and educational purposes.

The project has not only brought about a relative natural “spruce” to the area, but it has also initiated other projects and programs from private partners. These include a renovation of parking lots, a rent-a-bike service for sustainable and clean mobility, plans for the renovation of a canoe-kayak club, etc.

Throughout the Slovenia-Hungary cross-border region, numerous attractions have been created such as green routes, educational facilities, museums, accommodation facilities and different spots for camping. It presents a good example of how going in nature can become attractive to families, young people and children as well as tourist groups to experience nature in all its entirety. It can be done through individual tours or packages. One should only visit the program webpage and choose.
