The new technology will be of great help to the blind and visually impaired persons
The City of Donostia also known as San Sebastián, in collaboration with the local bus service has launched a pilot test of the Navilens technology. It represents an application that transmits useful information contained in last generation QR codes. Those have been installed in various points of the Bus Station and enable blind or visually impaired people to get around it more easily.
By simply taking out your mobile phone, the application will detect nearby codes, without the need for precise placement - allowing users to listen to the voice giving indications about the environment and how to access the different points of the station. The QR codes are also useful to citizens or visiting tourists as they help them navigate the station more easily and gather the needed information about the city.
This technology arrives for the first time in the Basque country (referred to as Euskadi) thanks to the city of San Sebastián. The project is currently in the pilot phase and will be updated based on the suggestions of several groups of users which were invited to test the application during the past European Mobility Week and to advise on its use for other functions or at other points in the city.
