Nicosia Municipality to expand free Wi-Fi

Nicosia Municipality to expand free Wi-Fi

Thanks to the European initiative WIFi4EU

Nicosia Municipality announced that it has received a voucher for 15,000 euros for the installation of a Wi-Fi network from the European Commission. Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis was personally handed the voucher by European Commission representative earlier this August. Nicosia Municipality was selected, along with 32 other local authorities across Cyprus, out of a total of 10,000 applications submitted at a European level.

The financial support is part of the WiFi4EU project, an initiative promoting the development of a free wireless broadband infrastructure in public hotspots, including libraries, museums, public parks and squares. Covering the cost of equipment and installation. 120 million euros are available from the EU budget until 2020 to fund equipment for public free Wi-Fi services in up to 8,000 municipalities in all member states as well as Norway and Iceland. Each participating country received at least 15 vouchers. The WiFi4EU initiative aims to connect every European village and every city with free wireless internet access around the main public spaces by 2020.
