The end of October 2018 will mark the start of an official campaign for organic waste separation at national level in Malta. In concerns food waste, napkins and soiled paper, leaves and flowers. The collection of waste from households will happen three times a week. The free home kits are currently being distributed across the country, so that each household is prepared for the start. Organic waste will be collected in white bags and the objective is to reduce the volume of non-recyclable waste with up to 50%.
In fact, the initiative is already being tested for 3 years in 10 selected localities, including the Island of Gozo, which also falls within Malta archipelago territories. The initiative is jointly implemented by Waterserv Malta and the Ministry of Environment of Malta and will soon be mandatory, therefore the households that don't respect the new procedure are subject to a fine.
