Porto allocates 4 million euros for social housing

The “Porto com Sentido” programme was adopted by the City Council earlier this week

The Portuguese City of Porto has taken more bold steps in order to ensure living accommodations for the most vulnerable members of society. Earlier this week, the City Council reached a final decision on the implementation of the “Porto com Sentido” programme which is meant to alleviate the pressure and reduce the burden on many local families.

Acting in a time of great need

The coronavirus pandemic has substantially worsened conditions for many of the poorest and most vulnerable members of society across the entirety of Europe. That is why immediate social action must be taken in order to prevent them from falling into further despair.

In comes the “Porto com Sentido” programme. Its main goal is to incorporate new types of properties into the city’s house rental market – housing that is currently available on the local market and housing available on property purchase and sale market. In order to do so, the municipality will invest some 4.3 million euros by the end of 2022 for a grand total of one thousand leases with a duration between 3 and 5 years.

According to the mayor of the city, Rui Moreira, local governments do not have the capacity to solve their housing issues all on their own – instead, state intervention is needed. Yet that should not stop municipal authorities from seizing every chance they get to improve their citizens’ lives. Thus, the Porto government has decided to turn a problem – namely the housing market in the city – into an opportunity, by making parts of it available for rent at affordable prices.

In order to ensure the affordability of the housing, municipal authorities will perform strict control on prices so that they remain well below the average price of rental accommodations throughout the city, thus ensuring that even the most vulnerable citizens can find a home until they get back on their feet.
