Prague swapping event encourages people to quit fast fashion

On 15-16 January, residents of the Czech capital can exchange their unwanted items for 20 other pieces

This weekend (15-16 January), Prague’s residents can attend a swapping event at the Vzlet Cultural Centre. There, they will have the chance to dispose of their unwanted items and take home 20 second-hand pieces that will bring them joy.

More specifically, the January swapping event will allow people to discard the clothes they no longer wear and their unwanted holiday gifts in an environmentally friendly way that will also make others happy.

Understanding fast fashion

The rise of fast fashion has made it possible to purchase new clothes frequently and at a low cost. Digitalisation has further facilitated this, as people can now buy multiple items from the comfort of their living rooms. It follows then that shoppers are buying and discarding more clothes than ever before.

On 15 January, the attendees of the swapping event will not only have the chance to exchange their belongings but to also watch the French documentary film Fast Fashion: The real price of cheap fashion. As the title suggests, the film will show the impact of the fast fashion industry and how it affects our climate. Furthermore, it will inform viewers about the devastating working conditions of the fast fashion factory workers.

In addition to featuring a film screening, the event will also offer several workshops and talksthat will encourage people to opt for more sustainable fashion.

Bring all unwanted items

Although the swapping event mainly aims to promote the exchange of clothing, people can bring any unwanted belongings such as books, accessories, and household items. The only rule that attendees must follow is that all items they bring in must be in good condition.

Those who wish to attend the event and dispose of the items that no longer bring them joy can purchase a ticket online for CZK 150 (EUR 6.13). This will then allow them to also take home 20 “new” pieces.
