Renovations begin in Nicosia’s commercial triangle area

The project is meant to make the site more competitive and attractive to visitors

The Municipality of Nicosia is eager to announce the commencement of the 2nd phase of works on the city’s Commercial Triangle Makarios - Stasikratos – Evagorou. The renovation works concern the undergrounding of Public Utility Services, new rainwater drainage system, provisions for the installation of a smart city, construction of a new asphalt road and new sidewalks, removing the existing elevations according to the existing of shared design (shared space), new street lighting and new urban furniture.

Supporting businesses and protecting the environment

This project was high on the priorities of the Development Strategy of the Municipality of Nicosia, as it seeks to make the urban shopping centre of the capital competitive, attractive and friendly to humans and the environment.

High criteria for sustainable urban design were adopted for the project with the aim of:

  • Upgrading the functionality and aesthetics of the urban environment with new coating, urban furniture and lighting.
  • Facilitating accessibility for all, pedestrians and the disabled and increase traffic by creating single and large sidewalks and eliminating all uneven points between private, public sidewalks and the road.
  • The creation of small squares with the possibility of outdoor activities and the integration of water elements.
  • Enhancing shading by planting a large number of mature trees and applying the principles of bioclimatic design, increasing the hours that pedestrians will be able to move around comfortably.
  • The installation of a holistic "smart city" system, owned by the Municipality of Nicosia.
  • The undergrounding and improvement of all utilities.

The Project implements the provisions/actions of the Integrated Mobility Plan of Nicosia and the Area Plan of the Center of Nicosia to promote sustainable transport, enhance sustainable mobility in the urban area of ​​Nicosia as well as reduce Carbon Dioxide Emissions.
