Residents in the Danish Municipality of Roskilde can now help protect the environment while taking part in exciting summer activities. That is, the National Park Skjoldungernes Land will allow individuals to book a 2-person kayak equipped with a waste bin between the two seats. They can then enjoy nature and experience the park in a new way whilst removing plastic, paper, and other types of litter from Roskilde fjord.
This project is a collaboration between Roskilde Municipality, Lejre Municipality, Roskilde Oplevelseshavn and National Park Skjoldungernes Land. With the project’s launch, these bodies seek to provide people with entertaining experiences that simultaneously allow them to keep the fjord free from rubbish.
Nature guide and Project Manager Sofie Clauson-Kaas from the National Park Skjoldungernes Land commented on the aims of the project: “We hope that the kayaks will contribute to a lot of people having a lot of good experiences out on the fjord this summer, and that we also get a collection of paper, plastic and other waste that gets lost on the water and around the coasts.
At the same time, we hope that the kayaks will create an increased awareness of waste in nature and thus inspire more people to collect some waste and take it to the nearest rubbish bin when you are out there anyway.”
Residents can book kayaks for 2 or 4-hour periods via the Outdoor Adventures website until 30 September. Furthermore, they are invited to take pictures and share them on social media with the hashtags #affaldsfrifjord, #nationalparkskjoldungernesland and #outdooradventuresdk to encourage and inspire more people to take part in the activity.
Ultimately, it is hoped that people will feel motivated to take action and clean their environment in a way that is fun and exciting.
