A one-year trial run starts from 1 January
Children up to 12 years of age will ride for free on Rotterdam public transport from 1 January 2022, the municipality announced on its website, yesterday. This is part of a one-year trial programme with which the second-largest Dutch city wants to make public transport more accessible and attractive for parents and encourage them to opt for a more sustainable travel option for their kids rather than driving them by car.
Parents with children, residing in Rotterdam, will be able to benefit from free mobility for their kids on metro, tram and bus throughout the next year as part of a test period of one year. The offer extends to children aged 4 to 12, as kids aged 3 years or younger already travel for free.
With this test measure, Rotterdam wants to provide a free, convenient and safe alternative to the family car and give children the chance to become familiar with public transport from an early age. Moreover, the city wants to help them discover fun and new places in the city.
The free 2022 personal card can be claimed by parents as of 1 December and is valid only if the child travels accompanied by an adult. The offer extends to families who reside in the city.
