Skåne with 100% fossil fuel free public transport

Skåne with 100% fossil fuel free public transport

The challenge has to be completed by 2020

Skåne County, the southernmost county of Sweden, aims to become totally free from fossil fuels in energy consumption, public transport and vehicle use by 2020. By then, thermal energy, district cooling and electricity for all of the properties owned, rented or used by Region Skåne´s administrations will come from energy sources that are fossil fuel-free. Fossil fuels, such as oil, petrol, coal and natural gas, contribute to an increased greenhouse effect – this is the reason why Skåne promote renewable energy and fuels such as biogas, wind power and hydrogen gas.

The county government together with the local councils in Skåne have taken the initiative known as Climate Interaction Skåne and set the challenge of “100% fossil fuel free Skåne 2020”. Several local councils, businesses and organizations have joined the initiative. The challenge requires participants to become 100% fossil fuel free in the energy use of all buildings, in all transport and in in all electricity use.

Skåne also had a good basis for the production of biogas and is working to implement a biogas transport plan. This plan has been signed by over 50 entities in Skåne which all agree to support the production, distribution and use of biogas. This work is expected to lead to the creation of thousands of new green jobs.
