Slovakia updates COVID-19 border policy

Slovakia updates COVID-19 border policy

Those arriving in the country will either have to present a negative PCR test or enter into quarantine

With the rise of COVID-19 cases across Europe, Slovakia has introduced new and updated rules to those travellers seeking to cross its borders. The changes to the existing rulebook will allow those arriving both from within and without the EU to avoid quarantine should they be able to present a negative PCR test upon their crossing into Slovakia.

Changes as a response to a rapidly shifting situation

Earlier last week, the Slovak government announced changes to how people will be allowed into the country without having to go into quarantine. While previously it was only EU nationals that were allowed to avoid going into self-isolation upon presenting a negative PCR test, the same rule will now also apply to those arriving from outside of the European Union.

The general rule for those seeking to cross the Slovak border is that they will be forced into quarantine unless they present a negative PCR test that is not older than 72 hours. Without a PCR test at hand, Slovak nationals arriving home will be invited to register at Slovakia’s COVID-19 hub and self-isolate for 5 days before receiving a test for free.  Meanwhile, arrivals from EU countries designated as “red” will be allowed into isolation without a test, while those coming from non-EU countries will have to get tested and wait for a result.

Border checks for negative PCR tests and more stringent border control will begin on 15 November according to the Slovak government as it seeks to tighten the inflow of new arrivals in order to stem the tide of new COVID-19 cases. On that same date, Slovakia will also switch to the European COVID-19 warning system, according to Health Ministry Officials.
