Sofia metro to be expanded with six more stations

The project is expected to receive funding from the Recovery plan for Europe

The Sofia metro network will be expanded with six more stations worth BGN 530 million without VAT (271 million euros). This is envisaged in a public procurement announcement, published by the municipal company "Metropolitan".

The funds shall come from Bulgaria's Recovery and Sustainability Plan for overcoming the corona crisis, which the country must defend before the European Commission.

European funds for economic and social recovery

The six new metro stations will be located from Voenna Ramp Park to Tsarigradsko Shose through the Slatina neighbourhood. The construction of a buffer parking with 230 places is also previewed.

Tenders for the public procurement will be collected by April 15, and the stations themselves are expected to be ready by 2024. The funds should come from the National Plan for Recovery and Sustainability worth BGN 12 billion, which Bulgaria must defend before the Commission in spring and which at the end of last year did not envisage such a railway project.

We also remind our readers that Sofia recently opened the first stations of the third metro line - this happened at the end of August 2021, with a delay of more than a year. The section from "Kpasno selo" to the former "Vladimir Vazov" in the "Hadji Dimitar" district consists of eight metro stations.

According to the plan, the opening of four more stations of the same metro diameter is expected this March - next to "Ovcha Kupel" and "Gorna Banya" districts. According to the company, it is expected that the construction of the entire third line of the Sofia metro will occupy over 50% of Sofia's public transport and will transport over 650,000 passengers daily.
