Choosing to go to pursue a higher education degree in Germany means one has to carefully conduct their own research about what the different types of higher education institutions in the country have to offer. The three main types of schools are as follows:
1. Colleges of Art, Music or Film
These institutions offer the equivalent to a regular university diploma. They specialize in various arts - music, photography, sculpture, etc. The application may include a small portfolio to be presented, plus entrance exams. More than 1/3 of the sudents in German music schools come from foreign countries.
2. Universities for Applied Sciences
They provide education in many areas, including business, technology, media, etc, and are very much practice-oriented which means that some programs may offer an extra semester of practice.
3. Research-oriented universities
These universities offer a variety of courses and many of them provide a period of practice too, however, they focus heavily on theoritical training. Technical universities offer studies in the areas of natural sciences and engineering.
