The Time Machine Opatija programme will explore traditional music, vintage vehicles, and historical figures

From 1 July until 30 September this summer, citizens and tourists can experience a “time machine” tour of the Croatian city of Opatija. The time machine experience has been organised by the Tourist Board of Opatija and it will be the third time it takes place. Interesting events will reportedly be held every single week, from Monday to Wednesday.

Three main themes will be explored

Every Monday, the Tourist Board of Opatija will explore the theme of klapa music: traditional a cappella singing. The motifs of this type of music often revolve around the sea, homeland, love, and wine. The “time machine” experience will therefore include famous verses from the “historical songbook” of the region. These songs will be sung by 3 renowned groups, namely the Klapas Mirakul, Opatija, and Baladur.

On Tuesdays, citizens and visitors will be taken on a journey through time as they marvel at the vehicles of the past. In a press release, the City of Opatija reported that tourists will be able to view beautiful and well-preserved luxury cars which have once been driven by celebrities and famous visitors.

The last “time machine” experience will take place on Wednesday evenings when domestic and foreign tourists can take part in a coastal, costumed promenade. According to the municipality, prominent historical figures will be presented during this walk and attendees will gain unique insight into the secrets of the Croatian city’s past.

Director of the Tourist Board of Opatija Suzi Petričić commented on these events, noting: “The project aims to create a special experience for our guests and all programmes are free. This is the third year of the Opatija Time Machine and the reactions of all participants so far have been extremely positive, because this concept of researching local heritage and history gives them a completely different experience of Opatija.”
