That was #EuropeForCulture
To mark the closure of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH) a Closing Conference #EuropeForCulture was organised by the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The conference focused on presenting the many activities that were implemented and contributed to raising awareness, disseminating good practices and promoting policy debate, and supporting research and innovation on cultural heritage. The main focus of the conference was the legacy of the EYCH 2018 and how ideas can be further developed and integrated into cultural policies.
Cultural heritage has a universal value for us as individuals, communities and societies. It is important to preserve and pass on to future generations. You may think of heritage as being ‘from the past’ or static, but it actually evolves though our engagement with it. What is more, our heritage has a big role to play in building the future of Europe. Through cherishing our cultural heritage, we can discover our diversity and start an inter-cultural conversation about what we have in common. Cultural heritage should not be left to decay, deterioration or destruction. This is why in 2018, we celebrated and preserved it.
