Thessaloniki gets ready for its metro launch in November
The underground rapid transit lines have been under construction for almost two decades due to various project delays
It is almost 100 years old
Modiano Market is a historic market in the city center of Thessaloniki. It was built in the 1920s by the renowned architect Eli Modiano, a member of the prominent Italian-Jewish Modiano family of Thessaloniki.
The Central Council of Greece’s Contemporary Monuments decided to approve an architectural team’s plan to renovate the historic Modiano Market in Thessaloniki. The construction will take approximately one year. The new face of Modiano is expected to see light most likely around the middle of the 2020. The plan is to combine the characteristics of the market as it was in the 1920s with modern-day architectural styles. The entire market area is protected by the Greek state, so the architects are not allowed to change the use of the building or its original style. The plan is to get rid of all the smaller constructions which market holders have added over the past several decades. These stalls and constructions are actually illegal and have also aesthetically ruined the market. Additional structural support will also be added to the almost 100-year-old building, which is vitally important for the future safety of customers visiting the market.
