The opening of the Lake Tisza Ecocentre in Poroszló changed the lives of the 3,000 residents of this village in eastern Hungary. Built with EU funding of nearly €6.5 million, the centre attracted more than 150,000 visitors in its first year. It offers a glimpse of the wildlife of Lake Tisza and houses Europe’s largest freshwater aquarium.
The hitherto little-known natural wonders of Lake Tisza and the Tisza valley are showcased in the Ecocentre’s 4-floor, 2,600m2 main building and 10-hectare leisure park. The centre also houses Europe’s largest freshwater aquarium with 750,000 litres of water, exhibition spaces, a 3D cinema and a lookout tower. It is one of Hungary’s most popular tourist attractions.
