The power of wind, Denmark turns a new page in energy production

There are now definite plans for the construction of the world’s first floating wind energy hub

Earlier this month, exciting news came from the Danish Energy Agency, which unveiled ambitious plans for the construction of the world’s first wind energy hub. It will be under the form of an artificial island floating some 80 kilometres west of the Jutland Peninsula in the North Sea.

The idea is to have a platform of 120 000 square metres which will be surrounded by 200 wind turbines that will supply it with electricity, which will then be redistributed by the hub to European households. How many households? The goal is to eventually reach 10 million of these on the continent in line with the climate neutrality goals set by the European Commission.

What makes this news even more surprising is the fact that the Scandinavian country is currently the largest oil producer in the European Union. That means that the local authorities are planning a bold move to abandon a profitable industry because they firmly believe that sustainable energy production is the future.

In fact, the country has cancelled all fossil fuel production contracts after 2050 as a show of firm commitment. That makes it biggest oil producer in the world to make such a move.

”This is truly a great moment for Denmark and for the global green transition. This decision marks the start of a new era of sustainable energy production in Denmark and the world and it links very ambitious climate goals with growth and green jobs. The energy hub in the North Sea will be the largest construction project in Danish history. It will make a big contribution to the realization of the enormous potential for European offshore wind, and I am excited for our future collaboration with other European countries,” said the Danish Minister for Climate, Dan Jørgensen.

The plan also previews the conversion of electricity to green fuels, such as hydrogen and methanol that will also be piped to the mainland. The island hub will be a public-private partnership collaboration, with majority ownership of the platform being by the state and the operations carried out by private investors. More details will be offered when the tender procedure is opened.
