Future research funding will include a very significant effort to promote disruptive breakthrough innovations
Evolution, not revolution will continue to guide next EU research funding programme. EU has an extremely strong science pillar, largely based on the European Research Council, which is clearly one of the successes of the framework program and European research more generally. There is a very high European added-value in this science pillar of Horizon 2020 and of the future framework program.
After becoming the Director-General for research and innovation at the European Commission, Jean-Eric Paquet spoke about the future research funding. He outlined in his first interview that the expectations of societies and the need for science to live up to the now-a-days challenges are greater than ever. As to the budget of this funding program, the European Commission outlines three possible scenarios – 80, 120 or 160 billion Euros. The Commission's proposal is due to be published by end of May.
