The National Opera and the National Theatre will open under certain conditions
Two pilot programmes will allow the Bucharest National Opera and the Bucharest National Theater to organise indoor performances. Those who have been vaccinated, those who have recovered from Covid and can demonstrate that they have formed antibodies, and those willing to be screened prior to the show will be allowed to attend the shows. This was decided by the Romanian Minister of Culture Bogdan Gheorghiu.
The project timeline remains uncertain. A working group appointed by Minister Gheorghiu was given the task to develop these pilot programmes as soon as possible.
The Minister indicated that Romanian authorities "studied" what was happening in Spain and the Netherlands, which have already carried out such cultural projects. The value of the test against SARS-CoV-2, as well as the price of the protective mask, were included in the price of the entrance ticket to the shows.
Only those who have been vaccinated will be allowed to attend performances put on by the National Opera and the National Theater in the first phase. Individuals that have been infected with the new coronavirus and can demonstrate that they have produced antibodies would also be permitted entry.
"In the first phase, we considered a pilot programme only for the concert area in collaboration with the National Opera in Bucharest. But, I announce for the first time that we are also considering a pilot programme on the indoor theater component. In this sense, we will involve the Bucharest National Theater. The two institutions, the National Opera and the National Theater, have the necessary infrastructure to be able to implement the norms and to be able to evaluate and monitor the effects of these norms," commented the Minister of Culture.
The reopening steps introduced by the Ministry of Culture are preliminary and could change. The minister is pleased that things are “moving” and that the process of opening events to the public will begin on 1 June 2021.
