By doing so, they express their gratitude for the support they have received

A group of Ukrainians who fled their country and found refuge in the Czech capital expressed their gratitude to those who supported them during this time by cleaning the streets of two districts last weekend. More specifically, they met up at 10 am on 9 April to clean Prague 7 and Prague 10.

Before organising the event, the refugees contacted the mayor of Prague 7 Jan Čižinský to share their plans. Touched by their kind gesture, Čižinský first explained that there was no need for them to hold such an event.

“I explained in vain to our new Ukrainian neighbours that we are grateful that their men, women, brothers, sisters, fathers, and mothers are fighting for us and our freedom right now in Ukraine. But they did not relent,” Čižinský wrote in a post on Facebook.

Supporting the organisers, Prague 7 then helped the volunteers by providing them with cleaning equipment, such as garbage bags, and ensuring waste collection at the end of the event.

Bringing people together

Although Ukrainian refugees organised the event, they were not the only ones who took part in the cleaning as the mayor of Prague 7 and several Czech citizens also participated. What is more, a number of Russians also reportedly showed up, expressing their support for Ukraine and condemning Putin’s actions.

“We organise the cleaning as a token of gratitude for all our people who have received a wonderful reception and great help. We want to do at least something in return,” explained Marija, the event’s organiser.

The volunteers plan to continue expressing their gratitude in this way by holding similar events in other locations in the capital.
